5 Habits You Don't Realise Are Damaging Your Hair – and How to Battle Them!

So, you think using the best hair care products and styling equipment is keeping you safe from hair damage? Think again! Quite a few of the little things you do each day are hurting the cause of hair growth and you are blissfully unaware of what is happening. The good news is that most of these habits can be remedied!

Say No to Hot Water

The shower is one place where a lot of mistakes are committed albeit with good intentions. Steaming hot water might feel good but it strips your hair of essential oils, makes it frizzy, and causes coloured hair to fade faster. Lukewarm water and a protective shampoo are the remedies.

Style it Right

Top knots, tight buns, and high ponytails can pull on your hair and place stress on the delicate strands. In the long term, this can lead to hair loss or cause a receding hairline. Opt to let down your hair or choose hairstyles like low ponytails and loose buns.

Spray Vs Serum

Hair products you choose can do more harm than good if not used properly. Sprays containing silicone can dry out hair so it is better to use a bit of serum instead.

To Brush or Not To

Brushing your hair when it is wet might seem like an easy way to get it to stay straight and smooth easily. But wet hair is fragile and even the slightest pull can damage it in some way. A better option is to detangle with your fingers when your hair is lathered with conditioner in the shower.

Rules of Drying

Never use a curling iron or a flat iron on wet or damp hair. Even hair dryers should be used for styling after your hair has air dried up to at least 50%. A good alternative is using a microfibre towel to squeeze out water from your hair before styling.
